Don't trust Charter One Bank

After banking with them for several years I chose to use one of the balance transfer checks that they were constantly sending to transfer a balance. It said right on the check it was to be interest free for a year. When I got my credit card statement thy were charging me interest on the transfer. After several phone calls totaling almost 4 hours I was told that they were not going to honor the interest free because it appeared the bank it was being transfered from mistyped the check #. I am curently working on closing all my accounts with Charter One and suggest others do as well.

Hello Ssr2k, I am from Charter One's Office of the Chairman. I am sorry to hear about your experience, and I would like to learn more to see how we can best help.

In order to talk with you regarding your concerns, we need to speak with you one-on-one.

Can you please email your name and a phone number we can reach you at to AskCharterOne@***.com? (Please do not include any personal information such as social security numbers or account numbers in your email.) Thanks -- we look forward to hearing from you!

Guest

You clearly didn't read correctly. They began charging interest immediately on a interest free offer due to their error and refused to fix it. By the way my credits fine and my new bank is great.

Guest

:p lol...there's a flat fee for initiating a balance transfer...a ONE TIME FEE, that you AGREE TO before you initiate the balance transfer...were you asleep when the banker went over this with you, or didn't you care at the time, trying to rush out of the bank WHERE YOUR MONEY IS because flying home is more important? Within the 1st year, it presents a 0% APR...you know, an additional life line they granted you because you jacked your credit so bad...in which if you don't "knock your balances down", you'll get hit with an EVEN HIGHER APR after that year has expired (the intention, obviously, to pay everything down within the year). I'm suprised they even offer such a generous product to customers who CANT ALREADY pay their bills on time...hope this helps.

Supervisor at branch 699

went to charter one bank - branch 699 - lines were long (about 10-12) people inside - 3 cars in drivethru - ask customer service man "do you know if there's just one teller" he said he didnt work on that side - I ask who was the supervisor and he said the lady sitting in the chair - I said excuse me twice - I ask how many tellers are there - she said how many do you see - told her that is not what I ask - she said again - how many do you see - after I said I was calling Corp she then begin to ask people to step up - I called and spoke to Elliott the first time - cant remember the guys name I talk with the second time - ask the teller that was working what branch is this - she informed me that it's 699 - still talking to Elliott she (supervisor) didnt have anything else to say since she notice that I was talking on my phone - heard her call a couple of the men by name - told one that was sitting in the chair where she was working at that she was not available - she was already spoken for - I could have been another boss that stop by in street clothes to do my banking - point being she didnt know who I was and didnt care until she saw I was on the phone then her attitude start to change - dont think people like her that doesnt have a personnality to work with the public if you cant answer a simple question - didnt like it because thats not how you conduct yourself with the public - what got me was that she was getting smart with me because I ask how many tellers were working - if she had just said one - I would have left and went someplace else to do my banking - if she said two - I would have stayed without any problem - just ask one question - have been a charter one customer for over 10 years never had a employee speak to me like that - wish I was a manager from another branch - would love to saw how her face look then.

Banking experience

I opened an account with charter, i had to wait for my debit card for weeks, when i got it, they gave me a pin number, which i couldn't create on my own, apparently some kid who's single mom is on welfare new my balance...I went to activate my debit card, they said the pin doesn't work. I had to wait, til then i could use it as a credit.

I had a little over the minimum balance, I used my debit card as a credit at food marts, and i thought, well its getting close to maxing out so i stopped using it -- i found out they let it go over and they charged me 270 dollars in overdraft fees. I filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

And reported a complaint in general that -- in Law school, all contracts are signed in good faith, its an underlying thing -- if its broken -- contract is void. Lastly -- If theres crooks in the bank, and no regulation, theres your financial crisis --

I STRONGLY parallel was "Sessa" said, both as an educated consumer and banker myself.

Wow. Just when I've thought I've read everything, this gem appears.

You seem to not understand that THEY didn't overdraw your account, YOU DID. See, sweetie, this is why you pay attention to your balance and don't just keep using it with only a vague notion of how much money you have. Banking 101, and yet so many consumers seem to have great difficulty with this. And of course overdrafts are always the bank's fault.

Right. :roll :roll

A 3 Day Hold on Cash Deposit?

On July 1st I made a CASH deposit, of U.S. $20.00 bills - Charter One Bank put a 3 day Hold on my cash deposit AND saw fit to clobber me with over $200.00 in NSF charges during the interim.

Talk to the Manager?

all he did was grin, when I went to the branch to find out why my deposit was not credited the following day - he grinned!

(probably because he knew the NSF charges were coming, and there was not a darn thing I could do about it. The teller thought to impart her 'wisdom' and simply suggested I make another, immediate cash deposit, which she assured me she'd credit to my account right away :) *** are we if we continue to allow this sort of abuse by the ultra-rich and/or wealthy.

Correct - CharterOne Bank - Stay Away or surely you'll get yours one day.

That's ridiculous, it's a cash deposit, it's not like it has to clear from another bank. They take their time to post a deposit but make sure those debits or checks clear first so they can make money off the customer by charging a ridiculous overdraft fee. That's how the greedy get rich, they don't have to worry about not having money when they take from the less fortunate.

Guest

Sick and tired of their 'fees' I closed my account also. I signed up for paperless statements, that was supposed to wave a 'fee' that they charged for sending out statements.

Lost job, no money coming in, cannot work right now due to health issues, then I get charged monthly maintenance fees of 9.99 on each account, they want to charge me more money on top of what I already don't have. They tell me if I made a deposit that they could wave that. What part of I have nothing coming in to make a deposit or I would, are they totally clueless. It was fine and dandy with them when they got a payroll direct deposit every week.

Every time I went to my branch in person, they were always pushing me to sign up for this and that and that was a turn off. I also had started an investment with them and lost $3,000 on it. A good investor would help you make money, not loose it, I only regret not pulling out of this bank after that.

I could go on about the many issues but why, I'm done with them after 23 years. I like business that look out for their customers not how much they can make off of them.

Charter One Bank customers come first ?

Baloney! I've been a customer for over 15 years & have put up with the nickel & diming to death! Last year I took out a home improvement loan & paid it back in a year with no problems at all. They did a direct debit from my acct. i went to get another improvement loan & they saw a slight decline in my income last year & turned me down! It's the same loan type & about the same amount & same terms! It's under $3000.00 for cryin out loud! And my branch people keep trying to get me to take out a home equity loan?! Fat chance !

I've noticed that whenever I did go into the branch, in fact a few of them in several locations, there was hardly anyone in there. It's not because everyone is banking online nowadays because my other bank, I go in there, always people there no matter what time of the day. So what does that tell you?

Charter One Bank Closed My Accounts Without Notice

I was about to pay my home equity line on June 30 when I realized that the bank had zeroed-out my accounts, despite substantial balances on both accounts. After a phone call, the customer representative told me that my account was under review. Next day, July 1, I got a letter in the mail dated June 28th that my account will be closed on July 13th because the bank wishes to discontinue its relationship with my "organization".

CharterOne Bank has decided to hold on to my current balances for the next "seven business days". Worse still, by the time I realized what was going on, it was too late to stop my employer from depositing my July 7th pay check directly into one of the accounts.

Shame on CharterOne! Run from CharterOne! Close your accounts before CharterOne closes on you! This is a disappointment of a bank!

Retired Employees Treated Poorly

The only retiree benefit I received after 34 years was a free checking account for life. I have repeatedly been charged and must fight to have the fees removed.

If you are or become an employee of this bank....BEWARE! Charter One was a great bank until the greedy management sold out to Citizens Bank a wholly owned subsidiary of The Royal Bank of Scotland. The current bank philosophy is to make every dime they can any way they can. Unfortunately, banking is no longer a "service" based industry.

It is now a sell, sell, sell, mantality. Charter One is NOT the best place to do business even if you are retired from there.

Charter One Bank - another ripoff.

10 year customer. Yep, the old rearrange the POSTED debits for more overdraft fees. When I emailed what happened, they answered: "Thank you for your recent email regarding our order of pay. Our usual practice is to pay those items according to the dollar amount, ranked largest to smallest." When I said they had rearranged already posted transactions to 'help' me by padding their fees, they had the gall to tell me this: "Please be advised, once a transaction has posted to your account the date cannot be changed." When I pointed out that that is EXACTLY what they did, the story changed again, to something completely not applicable: "Thank you for your follow up email. Please be advised when you use your card as debit after 3:00pm EST, and use your pin number, the transaction will be held from your balance for the day however it will not physically post to your account until the next business day." Get the picture? They are hoping I'll give up. I'm going to the BBB.

I agree - absolutely file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Charter One is by far the worst bank I have ever used.

I took out a student loan for graduate school, and they changed the repayment terms multiple times without notifying me of the changes.

I used automatic debit payments to pay interest while in school, and when they discovered they had been miscalculating my payments for 12 months they charged me late fees and sent me directly to collections AFTER automatically withdrawing the $300 difference from my account without prior notification/authorization. Any bank is better than this one.

Guest

Update - I did file a report with the BBB. They refunded the 4 fees, but with a letter that said it was my fault and rehashed the BS they had been spouting at me.

Interestingly, I had miscalculated after the fees and managed to get negative again! Grrr. Jeez, talk about doofus. But the fee refund set me into the black and wonder of wonders they changed the posted negatives. Nice? No - they are still trying to charge $74 worth even though there is no negative on my statement. Hmmm.

But the real moral? FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE BBB.

Guest

My wife wrote a check and didn't tell me. I immediately checked my account and everything had POSTED except the check. I am, well not happy, but resigned to the overdraft fee. But they went back and changed the posting dates on 4 transations! That is my fault?

And once again this quote they sent me: "Please be advised, once a transaction has posted to your account the date cannot be changed."

So you tell me.

Don't overdraft.

Charter One Rips Off Small Businesses

Small business loan - never missed a payment and paid of 2/3 of loan but due to a "covenant breach" they are charging me HUGE amounts to keep loan in place and not call the loan (which would essentially shut me down). The fees to extend and keep the loan would be more useful to pay down the loan but they would rather hit me for cash fees so they can keep me in distress to keep their fees coming in. Cash flow continues to improve as the economy does so I cant wait to get this loan off my books then close all my accounts and tell everyone I know to stay away from these loan sharks. Wonder why the economy sucks? Try the banks ripping small businesses off to get the profits up. NEVER get in bed with Charter One!

Charter One Bank Sucks

Charter One has the worst customer service and retention! My account was over drawn $95. I had an electronic deposit set to go into the account (checking and had made arrangements for the account to remain open. When my electronic deposit went through; which was my student loans for summer semester, Charter one accepted the funds, took their $95 and now wants to send me a check for the remaining balance of the deposit. Its a crock, I urge anyone to move their accounts somewhere else. Charter one basically treats you like *** if you over draft. On a scale of 1-10 with one being the best and ten being the worst I would rate them a -125!!!!!

Charter one bank

Charter one refinanced a loan without my signature to my ex husband. They refuse to talk with me to get the facts after many attempts. They also ignored a home equity line of credit, closed the account and started foreclosure precedings. How does the same bank not realize that they have a mortgage and a line of credit with the same name and address on it? Customer service reps are the worst they don't have a clue about their jobs. Different departments don't communicate and they have no idea where your money is or goes. And just try to get someone competent enough to help you. I would not advise anyone to give money to this bank

The bank is protecting the privacy of the accountholder. Since your name is not on the loan, they will not release any info. On the up-side, the only one whose credit is affected by foreclosure is the one who did sign on the loan.

Outrageous fees after closing account 1.5 years later

After college I relocated to NC that does not have any CharterOne branches (smart thinking NC!). In order to close my checking account they made me drive 6 hours with a notarized document saying I am closing my Account because there is not a branch supported in NC.

I withdrew all of my funds and shredded my Debit Card (I did not get checks)in May 2008 with all the necessary paperwork. I received a call today from the collections agency saying I had a $100 fee and if I didn't pay, it would affect my credit score.

I called into CharterOne and spoke with Frank (he called himself a manager; I call him a HORRIBLE customer service agent) who couldn't even tell me what I was being charged for! He also told me that my Account was never closed in May of 2008; it was closed in Nov. 2009 when I was charged $100 and never received notification of being charged until today.

I did all the necessary steps they required of me to close my bank account and they didn't even close it! I drove 6hrs for no reason, except for them to charge my Account after I closed it and didn't not even notify me of this charge until I received a call today!

Frank asked me to update my Account Information and I asked him to read back my address that they have in the system (which was correct with my NC address so no updating was needed) then "Smart Frank" tells me that maybe they didn't have the correct address on hand and that is why I didn't receive a notification in the mail. Are you Serious, Smart Frank?! Do you remember the conversation we just had about my address being correct in your system?!?

Anyways CharterOne has screwed me over and just recieved $100 for what they can't even tell me what for! This bank is an absolute nightmare, they have horrible customer service, and just want your money (even after you close your account).

I do not recommend anyone banking here! Better Business Bureau here I come!

I'm banking here and the past few paycheck they have been taking fourty bucks from me. They don't post it in my transcastion or give me a notice.

Then they will put it back in then take it out and it overdrafts me. Then I get charged the thirty five over draft fee!!!! I called them and they tell me a transaction I made of that amount and I tell them I know.

But fourty bucks is missing and you're not showing it on my account! And this time the charged me a overdraft fee and I'm not even overdrafted....

Thanks for this info! I'm about to close my account, and have had a terrible track record with them so far. I'll be sure to look out for this!

Charter One does not respect customers!

I've been with Charter One in Canton, OH for 10 years. The only reason I didn't leave sooner is the inconvenience of changing my direct deposit.

I've been nickled and dimed to death, with NO EMPATHY from their so-called "customer-service". The final draw was when I was charged a $37 overdraft fee on a online auto w/d-payment set up for the 1st; it was posted one day early, leaving my account $21 short (my pay-day fell the next day). This particular auto payment was set up for years and never had problems. When I contacted customer service, the rude little comment from some little *** with no life experience was "you'll have to call online banking.

I would tell you no" [when I asked to have the fee credited]. The online banking guy was no better. They insisted it wasn't their mistake. THEY ARE THE ONES WHO SENT THE PAYMENT AND THEN CASHED THE *** CHECK ONE DAY EARLY!!!

Am I wrong? I was then lectured for 15 minutes by the supervisor that I have to have the funds in the account when the payment is set up. I set up the payments for auto w/d for convenience...based on my pay-days every other week (and the money is always in on that day to cover all the bills!)!! If you ask me, they just want to take your money however they can.

I, like many people, live paycheck to paycheck despite having a decent salary and don't appreciate their *** fine print and red tape. DO NOT GO TO CHAPTER ONE and tell all of your friends/family!! What happened to the good old days where the customer was respected and treated as though their business mattered???.

Funny how all these banks want bail-out but they don't want to help out their loyal customers in turn. I hope they all burn in *** someday!

I have been business with charter Bank for 11 years..I closed the account due to their bad customer service and wrong decisions making for valuabl customers. They dont know how to treat to the customers, how to listen to the customers, how to correct their mistake, They robed my money, They never listen to me..Customer rep neever listen to me The manager and staff never listen to me,,Someone stolen my check and mentioned date 2003 and 2002 years on the checks.charter bank honest this two checks,,They never call me, never email me, never mail me,They think this money is their money,,They play what they wanted,,Finally, branch manager cancelled those checks himself at the branch. Then, I got statment charged $35 for stop payment ,,They robed second time my money. The manager never educated me about this amount because he needed to steal $35 from my account..I again comlined to customer service and nothing happened, as I mentioned they never listen to the valuable customers, never never never ever bank in the charter,Say to friends, relative, and all, period

Charter One has the most incompetent customer service I have EVER experienced. It seems like their system is designed so that every staff member can simply pass the responsibility off to someone else and delay every request until you likely end up paying their exorbitant fees.

NEVER AGAIN!!!

Home equity loan

I've had a home equity with CHARTER ONE for 5 yrs and have always made the payments ahead of due date and I'm about 6 months ahead of the loan.Have had no problems or trouble of any kind. Since Jan.2010 I've had nothing but problems with them.

If I " continue to make payments before the due date the payment will go to the previous month so it's going to look like you haven't made the payment for the current month" and if "you could wait until 2-3 days before the due date to send in the patment it would save us and your self a lot of trouble ". I have never been treated so unprofessionally and so shabbily by their customer service people - especially David, Donna and Leonard (a manager). I receive letters and phone calls from them threatening to send it to a collection agency and actually incur late fees for keeping my loan up to date - and paid off at least 6 months early. Dealing with CHARTER ONE has not been a pleasant experience at all and I would certianly never refer them to anyone.

They seem to be very incompent and don't care if they inconvience their customers at all. I'M A VERY DISSATISFIED CUSTOMER!!!!!!
